When we factor in the sin and lostness of the elder brother in the story, our definitions change. Most people think of sin as failing to keep the rules, but what we see in this parable that sin is thinking you can avoid needing a savior by being “good.” This new definition is teaching us that the pre-requisite for receiving grace is knowing how desperately you need it.
